Its true! Rummy Royal will be hosting a massive $30,000 kalooki tournament this weekend which they are expecting to be huge with many new and old players turning up to play kalooki so expect a big field hopefully swimming with fish. If you don’t know how to play kalooki then don’t worry I have written out the kalooki rules here - I also found a great website with even more kalooki strategy so check it out - www.Onlinerummy.co.uk

The tournament will be at 19:00 on January 17th and has a buy in of $100 but don’t worry there are many qualifiers starting from $3.25.

Thats right! I just noticed on Rummy Royal they have a Kalooki 51 tournament on March 22nd with a $15,000 tournament. The buy in is $55 with an option for 3 rebuys till tourney level 5 but don’t worry because if that is too steep there are loads of smaller satalites you can qualify with which range from small 4 people single table kalooki tournaments to multi table tournaments with a buy in of $7. Personally I would advise you go for the single table as its a 1 in 4 chance or just $15 and means you only have to beat 3 people rather than a number of players.

As an asside I think this is brilliant for online rummy - I remember when I first started playing online rummy for money and you could barely get a $5 game and now we have $15,000 tournaments - Happy days! I am looking forward to the first million dollar rummy tournament online.

Gin Rummy Strategy – An Introduction

Gin rummy is a very interesting and fun game to play. However, like some of the other card games, strategy plays an important role in deciding whether you win or lose a game. It is very important to be aware of gin rummy strategy, especially if you are a beginner, as without it your chances of winning consistently reduce drastically. If you are up against an experienced player, without knowing at least some basic gin rummy strategy, your loss would be more or less certain.

Basically, you can divide gin rummy strategy into two types:

• Basic gin rummy strategy
• Advanced gin rummy strategy

In this article, we will discuss some of the strategies you can employ to increase your chances of winning while playing gin rummy.

The Basics of Gin Rummy Strategy

The basic strategies in gin rummy are quite simple. You can easily learn them even as a beginner, and ensure you have the game going. Even as a beginner, you should know some of the advanced strategies as they are simple and enable you to increase your chances of winning greatly. First, we will see the basic gin rummy strategies you can employ.

The first thing you must learn to do while playing gin rummy is to meld cards such that you are able to create runs (sequences of cards) and sets. Once you start doing this, the next thing to do is to start discarding standalone cards, preferably the high ones. The idea is to finish your hand as soon as possible and then knock.

Some Advanced Gin Rummy Strategy

Once you are aware of the basic strategies for gin rummy, you are now ready to learn the advanced strategies. These are also relatively simple, and easy to pick up.

The first advanced strategy in gin rummy is to be aware of the importance of the middle cards. In gin rummy, the middle cards have high strategic importance, even more than the face cards or cards of low value. The card that you can use the most to form combinations is 7.

For instance, the ace may have a high value from the perspective of points, but can be used in a run with just a 2-3 combination. This is not the case with the 7-card, which you can use with different card combinations – at the end of a 5-6 sequence, in the middle of a 6-8 sequence, or at the beginning of an 8-9 sequence.

There is also the possibility of your opponent knocking lower to get an undercut. This is a distinct possibility if the game has meandered such that you are now nearing the end of the card deck. The decision to knock, also called ‘go for gin’, and depends on the number of cards left to draw that could potentially give you gin on your next draw. This number usually ranges from zero to five.

Another good strategy to follow is to retain your high cards at the beginning of a game, as your opponent is more than likely to drop them. You could pick up one of the high cards your opponent drops to create sets or runs, thereby reducing to a large extent the number of points you have left from your unmelded cards. However, you must understand this is a good policy to adopt at the beginning of a game. Holding on to them as the game progresses is a risk that you should not take, as it could mean your opponent is using high cards as well.

Right so there you go that is basic gin rummy strategy and now I have given you some of my wise knowledge, get out there and win some money

Yes, the title is true….Gin Rummy can kill….Well it does if you are playing gin rummy with your mates in Malaysia.

Ermm - Let me make this a little clearer - last night in Kuala Sapetang in Malaysia police raided an illegal gin rummy game taking place on a jetty with 10 people in attendance. Unfortunately when the police decended on the gin rummy game the player got scared as it is against the law in that province and scarpered, however one of the players thought he’d jump in the river and never reappeared.

Deputy Taiping OCPD Supt Syed A. Wahab Syed A. Majid commented:

“I was so surprised to hear that some of them jumped into the river, even though it was raining heavily and the water was fast flowing at the time.

“After all, gambling is not a major offence,” he said, adding that police managed to arrest four men, all in their 20s.

Crazy!! 1) I can’t imagine being hunted down by the police for having a game of gin rummy and 2) actually drowning because of a game of gin rummy

Let that be a lesson to you all - Don’t play gin rummy in Malaysia

The Gin Rummy Association has now announced the dates and venue for the next World Series of Gin Rummy and it isn’t far off, in fact it is in just 7 weeks - May 18th - 21st at The Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

If you haven’t attended this event or even heard of it, basically it is the gin rummy event of the year and with prizes set at $40,000+ it attracts some of the best rummy players from all over the world because you are of course also awarded the title “Best Gin Rummy Player 2008.) So if you have been playing lots of gin rummy online perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to put your skills to the test!
